A Textile Holiday Tribute: Manuel Canovas Paris

One of the best aspects of working in Architectural Interior Design for me was exposure to Textile Manufacturers and Designers in that industry. It's also been great to keep up on some of those lines as I continue to explore textile in fashion now. Thank you Cowtan and Tout for allowing me to study the details of this Manuel Canovas "Frida" textile. The modern application of this ancient Mexican Motif is bold and beautiful. I'm sure it will find many happy customers and creative incarnations.

The mannequin frock is a little fashion assemblage I threw together this week. Consider it a Christmas postcard from Detroit to the many hands and professionals that continue to make the textile industry Artfully Inspired. Happy Holidays!

Is it really December already??? 2011 is slipping away too quickly for my sentimental heart, sigh. Ok, I had a moment and now it's time to take a look at a November outing.
UN-dress: Re-dress, was a very exciting Art and Fashion themed show at the tiny urban "Public Pool" gallery. Most of the photos above can be found at the on-line Metromix gallery compliments of photographer: Shaun Pezeshki.
A nice mix of local Artist showed work but I was particulary interested in seeing the work of Sarah Lapinski (Wound Menswear Designer) and Mark Watson (Fiber Artist). Congratulations to them both on a sweet show, and to Public Pool for bringing Art and Fashion together in a big way.

"Carve out a place to call home" is a brilliant tag line for this AD shoot (Concept and Tag is credited to the Marketing team at Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel). It's also a great line for the future of Detroit in my humble opinion. I'm tremendously hopeful about the future of this city and the collective industry here in Michigan.

I once told an associate during an interview "If you can make it in Detroit you can make it anywhere". That's my spin on the old addage "If you can make it in NY, you can make it anywhere". In my way of thinking, Detroit is the other side of the coin in the Creative/Fashion market demographic. Where NY has become too expensive to operate and compete in a diversified global market Detroit is primed for a major influx of people and opportunity on a grand scale. It may take some time, but we are ready and willing to take our place!

Leopold's bookstore is a smart and unassuming place to visit. If you are a bookish/magazine sort this is a must stop and see and buy something for good keeping kind of place. I initially stopped into Leopold's Books on one of my trips to the DIA not long after it's grand opening and made note of all the obscure semi counter culture/art/political gems it stocked.

Recently I was on the hunt for a copy of the fall issue of "Another" magazine which is published bi-annually and otherwise available on-line (Super Smart Magazine Format by the way). The mall based book store I purchased it at last year is now closed so I knew I'd have to do some digging. Dig I did. The Internet search for local distribution was fruitless so I called "The Book Beat" in Southfield and was told they did not carry it.

When I contacted the owner of Leopold's via e-mail I got a quick response back on the magazine and made arrangements to pick up a copy when it arrived. Score!!!

Now that is what I call service Detroit. This is why it's so important to support local business people and the resources they bring to our city. Next time you are in the mood for some international news on Fashion/Art or Culture make a B-line for Leopold's Book store.

Sewing and Reaping Industrial Hemp In Michigan

This is a must read post for any advocate of smart Michigan based industry ideas. I was given permission to share the content of this e-mail letter written by Mr. Everett Swift, who is executive director of Michgan Hemp.Org . The following is an abreviated version of that message.

"Hello friends in The Garment Industry,

MIHEMP had our Annual Meeting on Saturday and made a decision to support a "Farmer Fund", the aim of this fund is to raise three thousand dollars to be used for an application fee for a permit to grow Industrial Hemp from the DEA.

The Farmer Fund will be separate from our MIHEMP funding.

Now, I know that many of you are thinking why on earth would we invest money into something like this?, the DEA is never going to approve the permit, if it were that easy someone would already be growing the crop.

First off if that is what you are thinking you are right, it would be three thousand dollars wasted on a permit that will never get approved....But, it may not be such a waste if you look at it from another angle, as our attorney Matt Abel pointed out at the meeting, you can't challenge a decision by the DEA if there has been no application filed or a decision made, also think of the media exposure something like this could get, no one has applied for the permit in Michigan that I know of since 1940 when Henry Ford had one which he used it to grow hemp and build a car and fuel it with Industrial Hemp.

If the DEA refuses to act on an application or denies a permit and a complaint is made to the State Legislators and/or Michigan Representatives in the U.S. Congress or Senate they must give a formal response, they can't just do as they do us now and send a form letter or ignore it.

I have been pushing for Michigan to join the other states in the Industrial Hemp fight for four years and if I can raise the money I WILL apply for the permit. If handing three thousand dollars over to the DEA will get it done then I think it is worth the risk.

According to the DEA application you must show that you would be in compliance with State and Local law, I have a letter from Hillman Township saying there is no law prohibiting me from applying for the permit or growing the crop, I live in a county that has passed an Industrial Hemp Resolution,

I can find no state law that prohibits me from applying for the permit or prohibits me from growing the crop as long as I have federal approval.

When two farmers in North Dakota applied for this permit it started a movement that resulted 17 states passing pro industrial Hemp legislation so far."

Let's add Michigan to those other progressive states and support this important legislation. Collective industry teamwork is crucial and this kind of creative vision can help us diversify our resources and build innovative opportunities. Hi Friends, I'm a couple of blogs behind schedule but I just want to say a few words about a neat event put on by P2 productions recently. I posted a few photos of the fashion show. Fatoula Lambros, Cynthia LaMaide, and Sarah Jane Sarah Jane and Luminetta all had nice showings.

The theme of the event mixed Detroit Fashion Mavens with Motorcycle enthusiest and the hip urban Art/Photography of Janna Bissett. This event was also a "Pink Fund" fundraiser which is the cause of choice for P2 "Fash Fest" organizers.

The Artwork and Photography of Janna Bissett gave this event a cool dimension that most of these shows are missing.

By that I mean to say I have an affinity for both Art and Fashion in tandem, I do not experience them as exclusive or seperate entities in my lifestyle. So this made complete sense to see them together. It's a win, win format Detroit.

You would have to be blind not to notice the ultra hip and functional appeal of eyeglasses lately. In my styling work they have been a wonderful asset for fashionable story telling as well.

If you are a discriminating customer in need of quality eye wear with personality and style, you must stop by Berkley Eyewear to see Lisa Gilbert. That's exactly what I did when my vision became fuzzy and my need clear. I was thrilled to find such an extensive selection of designer frames to choose from along with the generous knowledge and help I needed to purchase my first pair of RX eyeglasses. I'm still getting used to my new purchase, but already have another pair of frames on my wish list.

I'm a huge fan of the Legre, Ogi, Seraphin, and Cinzia designer lines, however when I stopped into the shop last week for the "Girls Night Out" trunk show I also found a lovely selection of Revolution Beatles, and True Religion frames that were super cool. If you can not find your preferred designer brand frame in the mix, it might be possible the quality has changed over the years and there are much better options available for the value. Take time to look at what new designers are bringing to the market. A future trunkshow visit is highly suggested for those super stylish options not easily stocked.

Most of my associates know I am not in the habit of blogging on local shops, but instead enjoy sharing leads on resources and people that bring value and Style to our community. Berkley Eyewear is one of those gems and they are committed to making sure "You Look Gorgeous"!

Peter Baker is a Michigan Photographer who's work is included in Zara's "Dear America" marketing campaign. Congratulations to him on this exciting body of work.

Upon receiving this wonderful photographic archive of prints from Zara, I decided to select a few of my favorites and post them for this blog. My August advertisement Styling work with Coldwell Banker featured the work of local Artist/Designer Matthew Richmond and the paper dress he constructed for the shoot. This dress was on display at this invitation only exclusive open house party on the evening of August 10. Fashion/Real Estate Photographer Janna Bissett and I attended this open house party in support of the marketing campaign work we have enjoyed with CWBWM.

The entire building was open for tours and inquiries to the guest, but the reception was located in the Four Park West Penthouse residence, which is furnished and move in ready. The entire home is beautifully designed and decorated but my favorite room is the sleek modern library (photo above).

It was a picture perfect summer evening, the weather was glorious, and from the balcony we enjoyed live music performed at the newly renovated Shane Park stage just below.

"Marry Her Sweet" - Event Designer Wedding Shoot

Melinda Anderson aka MeMe Designs + Events is a Women about her business in Detroit. Formally trained as an Architect, Melinda has been growing her event design/production and planning expertise with a variety of interesting projects in the Detroit metro area. This photo shoot is one in a series of brilliant marketing campaign ideas she is working on for her wedding event business. This shoot is called "Marry Me Sweet" for that young at heart sweet and sassy bride. She's a modern girl with a sense of adventure and fun, she wants to celebrate her girlish beauty. She wants us to come along, and how can we resist?

I got to come along for the ride, so to speak, styling Melinda for this photo shoot. I really enjoyed the shoot idea and loved her sense of drama, just look at all the emotion and expression she displayed. It was hard to select a few of these unedited shots to share, but I think these capture Melinda's energy, vision and passion.

I'm excited to find out what her next bride incarnation will be, she keeps me guessing and wondering with anticipation. Until then I know Melinda will continue to dazzle us with creative and spectacular events, let's continue the celebration Detroit!

Polyvore: A Social Media Partner for Creative Business And Thinkers

Polyvore is what I would call an open source social media platform for creative people. Those people could include an artsy teenage student, a seasoned professional graphic designer or a high profile fashion designer and everything in between.

The sets above are a very small variety of my work on that site and part of my creative portfolio. I find Polyvore very easy to use and it has become a great tool for exploring visual ideas that initially come to me in words and then grow into visual stories in my mind.

The important thing to understand about sites like Polyvore and others is that they are also used for developing important market research for a wide variety of professionals. The activity on them is "Open" and that means interested research and business partners can use it to study emerging trends and patterns that help them to develop marketing strategy. This is a form of 'Crowd sourcing" in a marketing sense. I'm not sure why this is not explained as such in the media write ups you will hit on the web. Perhaps Polyvore and other similar sites don't think users will care, or that the information will scare potential users away from exploring it's benefits, but I'm speculating on that.

In some ways traditional business and media formats have perfected the art of "HYPE" and can get the restless masses to move toward their ideas which makes the back story irrelevant. I DON'T SHARE THAT NOTION. In fact I believe that respecting the intelligence of your audience and teaching them about the big and small picture is imperative. We all live in a social context and have a need to understand the structures that influence it, to make good decisions. That is where the real value is and that is part of every personal and professional encounter I have. To do otherwise keeps our lives very small and focused on temporary things.

I use Polyvore to indulge my love of research, and my passion for visual serendipity. I enjoy following the work of so many creative users all over the globe who also use Polyvore, it has opened up a world of ideas that are truly inspiring.

Jackson Browne is the poet of my Soul, it's true and I sheepishly admit I have a bit of a crush on him as well. So his recent stop in Ann Arbor, MI on April 20th was a quietly anticipated evening for me. I knew at once I had to wear this retro beaded silk Butterfly top for the occasion ( procured from DetroitDolly )a Detroit Vintage Dealer. It is the perfect visual celebration of my love for fashion and music; a little bit vintage a little bit Rock n Roll. No longer the jeans and t-shirt conservative girl I used to be in High School (when my concert going habit began), my Style has matured to include a little beaded bling for these rare outings. I still wear jeans, boots and leather jackets as I did back then, but I don't sacrifice beauty for comfort, I mix them up and have fun in the process.

Did I imagine myself at a party in a room full of folks with Jackson after the concert? Maybe. Would he notice the stunning color and detailed bead work from afar? I will never know, LOL, and who cares! I dress to celebrate an occasion, to celebrate how I feel about what I love. It was the "right" thing for me to wear to the concert and as the Michigan Theater Marqui announced, it was indeed "An Evening with Jackson Browne".

If by any chance you missed this year's IMAGINE Fashion Show, here is a look at a select variety of talent. The event was hosted by William Malcolm (Men's Wear Designer) and Channing Pierce (Miss Michigan, who looked Stunning in her Black Dress: by Bonnie Foley) and from what I understand those who presented work were edited by a local pool of Designers ( Wound Menswear- Sara Lapinski, Fatoula Lambrose, and Adriana Pavon, to name a few ) beforehand.

I enjoyed the brevity of the show and found the designers work and point of view to be interesting and impressive. I give them each verbal respect for following their passion, for working so hard to develop their skills and for being part of the emerging Fashion industry here in Detroit.

I also want to give a shout out to the pool of Models in the show. They were lovely, very professional and full of personality, which helped to make the experience more enjoyable. Matter of fact, the Fashion Designers in general seemed excited and proud of their work and that was neat to see.

Best of Show went to Cheryl Jackson, who's collection was really hip and sassy, the kind of stuff that keeps young Women running to the malls. Congratulations to her!

I want to Thank International Academy of Design & Technology for their dedication to Fashion and to growing the pool of talent in this region's emerging market.

Anna Tyler won the "Best In Show" competition at last year's International Academy of Design and Technology's Fashion gala. I attended that event with a Designer friend Janell Rogers and came away from that show curious about her story, it took me almost a year to find her. It seems Detroit International Academy of Design and Technology recongnized the importance of her work enough to feature it on this year's "Imagine Fashion Show" promotional material also. Anna is a graduate of their Fashion program.

I'm a huge fan of her fashion vision and am impressed not only with her skill and maturity but her dedication to living outside the box. A work opportunity has taken her to Melbourne Australia where she is working as a graphic artist for a textile wholesaler. She is also working on her own designs for accessories and a series of pencil drawings to be sold at a variety of weekend markets.

Artist for me are cultural Rock Stars, they re-define the boundaries of what we know and how we experience the world around us. The work I got to see at Cranbrook's first Stand alone Student, Alumni and Faculty show in Detroit was a unique collective experience. The vacant warehouse and Artist uniforms belied the serious art showcased and sold over it's two day installation. The 1 x 1 format was a guideline for featuring a single piece of work from an artist's portfolio.

The evening of Friday February 25th was the opening gala for collectors and supporters of Cranbrook Academy of Art. I found food, live music and an eclectic mix of people busily engaged with Students and Faculty purchasing Art. The second day of the show had a minimal admission fee and ran all day for the Art loving general public.

The photos I snapped of the Student and Faculty Artist above were just a few of my favorite. Check out their websites for more information or contact them by e-mail.

As a Stylist, I'm always looking for new ways to connect the sociological dots between, Art, Fashion, and Music, because I believe they are a powerful "Cultural Triad". They produce democratic signs of change.

Think Lady Gaga, she has a firm grip on this philosophy. Detroit is her kind of place, ripe with inspiration. When she calls, Cranbrook's community of artist will welcome the opportunity and Detroit will be ready to export it's distinctive beauty to the rest of the world. Artist Rebekah Frank is already getting calls from New York's Fashion Stylist about her amazing "Body and Material" Metal-Wear. It's good to be living and working in Detroit if you are looking for a golden creative grapevine. Our doors and minds are open to innovation and Art is our collective language!

There are times when we cross paths with individuals that seem to be divine appointments. I got that impression when I met Nichole Christian last year at a Women's Art show at the Crofoot in Pontiac where she was selling her cool T-shirts. The next time I found myself in her company, at a Birthday gathering my first impression was confirmed.

You may have seen her work in a few of the shops around Metro-Detroit, including Bureau of Urban Living, and Nakka, which carry a creative mix of "Detroitcentric" products. ThinkThis! Designs is one of those urban T-shirt brands to emerge with a powerful social voice. It's founder, Nichole Christian is deft at rolling complex social experiences and emotions into a simple tag line. She is a Detroit native and professional journalist with experience at The Wall street Journal, New York Times, and The Detroit FreePress. The goal of this photo shoot was threefold 1. A Modern Day Cleopatra Theme featuring Elizabeth Kincaid as Model and Muse. 2. Product Promotion: Include Elizabeth's custom handbags and rings from her "Minandieries Collection". 3. Include the Stunning Jewelry of Local Artist Jennifer Vermeersch. With that in mind I went to work pulling a team together to make this happen and you can see the fruit of our work. ROUGE Makeup and Nail Salon was a gracious host and Cheryl Salinas Tucker's professional and creative Makeup work is one I trust completely. Eric Peoples of Epic Image was someone I've wanted to work with so I was thrilled when he agreed to the project. Jennifer Vermeersch who is somewhat elusive was also tremendously helpful and generous with allowing me to select and use what I needed to create the look I had envisioned. James Merlo is a talented and hardworking newcomer to the Hair Stylist scene. He is currently in school at David Presley school of Cosmetology in Royal Oak and works part time for a salon in Farmington hills.

Elizabeth Kincaid is a humble yet successful Women of Style. She is passionate about "Emotionally Battered Women" advocacy in addition to her custom handbag designs. Her latest evolution of bags and accessories is titled "Minandieres" which is French for little bag. These elaborate little jewels are indeed attached to rings and carefully crafted with the finest materials and imagination. Eclectic Bohemian Jewelry is the desire of Women with bold personal style and Jennifer Vermeersch is a unique talent working in this rare aesthetic genre.

The jewelry featured here in my blog are definitely her more elaborate pieces, but she also makes simpler pieces, which include earrings and various custom accessories.

Her work includes a mix of glass, semi precious stones, custom metal work, vintage plastic, and precious metals. They are each finely crafted showing her high level of creativity and craftsmanship. Every piece is an artistic exploration, as she does not duplicate ideas, or materials when creating them.

Jennifer admires the work of artist Aubrey Beardsley, Sergay Smirrov, Kay Nielson, and Erte. Each of those artist has a surreal, romantic, yet graphic element to their work. Erte in particular is classic, glam deco and timeless.

I've had the opportunity to use some of her work in a couple of my fashion photo shoots recently. Jennifer's jewelry has also been used in fashion shows working with Femilia Couture in the past. Her work is currently sold at The Detroit Artist Market and also at ROUGE in Ferndale, MI.

I'm beyond thrilled to have this book in my library. I have a deep appreciation for History and especially enjoy the research canonized in this exhibition. I have been completely Captivated by her Refined Classic Style for many years

American born Wallis Simpson also became A historical women
of global controversy when the future King of England abdicated his throne to take her as his Wife. In so choosing Edward eschewed his Royal responsibility and honor for A simpler life....and they became known as The Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

Today there is a much anticipated Film called "The King's Speech" starring Colin Firth based on the true story of Edward's Brother, King George VI, who was forced onto the thrown and into history as England's next King.

This photo shoot was the brain child of Rose Suau (Artistic Direction with an Advertising background), who came to me with an idea for a Scary Doll look she wanted to capture in photos. I don't think I would have ever come up with it myself, but of course when she sold me on the vision....I put the wardrobe together. I really do love the clothes in this shoot...I think they look fantastic on them. As you can see Janna and Rose, have amazing creative energy and it was a thrill to collaborate with them on this project. Janna is also an accomplished and prolific artist and photographer. We had unseasonably warm weather the day of the shoot and that was an additional blessing as this was an early November shoot. It took a little persistence and a lot of patience to hear back from Ashley Lawler. The Fine Art Photographer and aspiring Graphic Designer is busy building an impressive portfolio of work. Her 3D photo collages are fantastic, but you will have to take my word for it. Shown above The first photo: 'The Fighter" was part of a student photo exhibition at OCC Royal Oak campus when I spotted her talent.

I asked for permission to show a very small group of photos I felt showed her eye for telling unique stories of Women. They capture something beautiful to view, but also so much emotion and most important I think they invite questions. Why is she holding her head that way? Why is her face missing? Why is she sitting on her suitcase? Why is the pink light halo glowing at the peak of the lovely umbrella? Why the firm open legged stance in such a beautiful red dress with combat boot? I love images that pull me in with beauty and questions.....A powerful combination for a fine art photographer to master.

Ashley is currently taking course work in Visual Communication and wants to work in Advertising and Film. She is also passionate about Lomography and collects exotic vintage cameras, which include: Brownies, Hawkeyes, Holga's, and Octomatt's.

I've been impressed with the work of Adriana Pavon for a fascinating mix of reasons. It's visionary, smart in it's execution and presentation and keeps growing in it's range and beauty. There is nothing homogeneous about her body of work and that is extremely exciting.

I'm quoting a good friend ( Latin Model and Actress Denise Carrasco) who said "She's Big Talent" as we discussed Adriana's work recently.

Adriana's work has been showcased at "Fashion In Detroit", and just last week at the "Style" event hosted by B.L.A.C. Magazine who's guest speakers were Robin Gihvan ( Fashion Journalist for the Washington Post) and Michel Martin (NPR Talk Show Host). There is no doubt Adriana is rubbing shoulders with and ruffling feathers amongst other established and well respected designers here in Detroit. However her clients and projects are much broader in scope than most Fashion Designers I've met.

She works tirelessly on building business partnerships and travels often to collaborate with other industry professionals on unique projects. Those hybrid encounters help to keep her creative energy high and her personal networks growing.

I'm not sure how old I was when I began to carry a handbag on a regular basis. Do you recall when that took place in your life? It's kind of a murky transition isn't it.

Like any other fashion collector I have an eclectic mix of handbags in my closet and am always on the hunt for another special addition. Each of the above bags would certainly be on that list if I could afford to acquire them that is.

At this point I'm content however to study, admire and write about my favorites.

What is Time?

I love the simplicity of Photographer David Smith's Pink Lips photo. The Asymmetrical smile is girlish and alluring. It represents the innocent glow of youth. It is one of those timeless Photo shots that will be as lovely in 50 years as it is today. As I admired and reflected on the Pink Lips photo, it inspired a thought: "Beauty is Fleeting...But Fashion Is Timeless." I think perhaps that is why the two are so intoxicating whether we realize it or not. One holds the promise of Glory and the other provides the 'Tools" to achieve it.

There is an Intense Simplicity about Michelle Kopka that draws me into her work. I can't say I understand that netherworld of Light and Isolation, but I'm captivated by it in every way.

This Center for Creative Studies graduate has earned her Star in photography by exploring her unique visual voice over the past 6 years. Her focus includes a mix of Fashion, Portraiture, and Fine Art.

I was delighted to learn about her research methods, inspirations and personal collections over coffee recently. Michelle collects "Vintage Props" which are often included in her work. She is keenly attune to places and things most of us overlook. The textures at the supermarket, the color of a room, the make up section of a drug store. She is also meticulous in her approach to staging, composition and execution. Inspiration comes from everywhere and often from a favorite record, or movie.

Michelle admires the work of Dutch Photo Artist Rineke Dijkstra and Author Lauren Greenfield, who wrote "Book Girl Culture".

You can see from this collection of her photography that she is deft at capturing the beauty and solitude of the Female experience. Some of her work is ghostlike and elusive, but it's also innocent and crisp. I love the nostalgic qualities in her work. I admire her precision and willingness to be vulnerable and her ability to evoke a wide range of emotion.

Michelle displays a powerful mix of talent and intelligence that will grow and evolve as she continues to expand her photographic horizons.

"I went to a cobbler To fix a hole in my shoe He took one look at my face And said, "I can fix that hole in you"

Jenny Lewis sings those words in "Acid Tongue" and I get a sense that Michelle is doing exactly that, with her poetic photographic powers.

Shoot the Fashion - Build Your Portfolio

Fashion Photo Shoot Paper Collage Collective work: Alvita Lozano, Salon Rehe, Kaley Hedric, Shannon McCarthy, Camille, LaMontagne, Trish Nguyen, and Sean Doerr at The Butcher's Daughter Art Gallery

This project is an example of an economically creative way to jump start cooperative volunteer projects with a specific focus. In this case, "FreeStyle In Detroit” along with a team of socially progressive up and coming talent have joined forces to do three things: Volunteer their time and skills, Celebrate Fashion in Detroit, and build a collective body of portfolio work.

The event: “FreeStyle In Detroit Fashion Portfolio Jam Session” is a one time event I have organized. It is an all volunteer cooperative team consisting of A Fashion Stylist (3 Stylist Assistants), Several Models, A team of Hair Stylist, A Makeup Artist, Several Photographers, and an Art Gallery Owner. All participants have little or no professional experience in Fashion.

This team is developing Fashion Photo Shoot experience, building new professional networks and creating a unique body of Fashion Portfolio Work. All team members will receive digital copies of the best shots for their individual portfolio use.

This is an “Idea” that any industry can use to build new networks of creative volunteer work.

“In this city in this recession, creative visionaries think outside of the box opening new doors not climbing old business structures. We need to work upside down and build new teams of people to move it forward. It seems everyone is vying for corporate sponsorship and government grant money which is great, however I say use what we have and that is creative talent, time and the power of unity. Let’s not wait on some kind of deliverance, let’s push together, create the swell in Detroit and put it on the International Fashion Map Grassroots Style. That is what FreeStyle In Detroit is all about".

Our feet, our shoes...what's the fascination, why all the fuss?

"I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." - Luke: 3:16 OK...John the Baptist just made reference to the footwear of Jesus...Wow!

Anthropologically speaking all tribes were nomadic at one time...and guess what? Their feet were "THE" source of mobility. That's huge!

Anatomically our feet are the 'foundation" for our body structure. Think Architecture....any Architect, Engineer, or Construction Worker understands the importance of laying the best foundation...it's imperative!

I think you get the drift...there is so much more to our feet and subsequently to our shoes as well. It's not just Vanity for the Style minded..there's a lot more to it if you look beyond the obvious. Just ask a serious Runner how important his shoes are.

Men and Women of Style have an intuitively complex relationship with Clothing. Shoes are an important element of their personal style equation. Their selection is not a random process...nor is it just a utilitarian decision. It includes, Vision and an Appreciation for Artistic expression. A great Shoe can Start and Finish an outfit.

Some of us collect and keep Shoes the way others build and appreciate A Library of Books or Music. I happen to collect all three and it's amazing to me how similar they are in ways. They each tell stories... some Epic, others Simple...they also inspire a rainbow of emotion and they are all uniquely powerful in the life of a creative dreamer.

"All Roads Lead to Fashion" is a phrase I may have penned...at least I have not heard it said before. It's also a fitting phrase for discussing mobility in the "Motor City". The Auto Industry seduced and transformed the lives of people all over the globe for a century. Detroit became the epicenter in the process. Today we are shifting gears and many work to create a new map to travel upon. As we do I can't help but look down at my shoes and whisper "Direct my steps by Your word, and let no iniquity have dominion over me". Psalms: 119-133 ....This is my travel prayer every day...as I follow the Man who wore those sandals John spoke of!

The only time I've seen my Mother (Ysabel Lozano) wear a strand of pearls was for a family portrait we sat for in my teenage years. In that photo her natural beauty is apparent and she looks so happy. This short post is made in her honor, today is her Birthday.

The photo above is one I took of her back in the day at a Chicago street fair in Pilsen where I grew up. She is wearing a lovely top with a storied past. We used to share clothes at that time, like I did with my stylish girlfriends and this was one of her favorites.

My Mother has always said of her personal style that she "is a simple Women". It's true, she likes to look good and takes good care of herself, but she's not flashy. She does however take an interest in fashion and is fun to go shopping with. I know she gets a kick out of my fascination with clothing and has always been supportive of my passion.

I found out the following about what Mother of pearl does: "A pearl grows when mother of pearl surrounds and builds layers around an object that's inserted into its shell by nature or humans." That's exactly what my Mother did for my siblings and I over the years. We have grown into our own because she built layers of safety and support around us in her own loving way. What a precious jewel she is in my life. "The Most Beautiful Women I know always wear Pearls of Laughter." Happy Birthday Mom, I hope it is filled with Laughter and smiles!

With Mother's day quickly approaching, the telephone photo is a visual reminder to call your Mother. If for some reason it is not possible for you to speak with her try to recall a favorite memory or photo where she is sharing her Pearls of laughter!

Shedding Style....A Curious Observation

If you haven't noticed the growing Pet focused service market in America over the last decade you might not appreciate the Brilliant Whimsy of these paintings. Detroit Artist Gregory Siemasz is the mind and talent behind their creation. With his recent exhibit at Flip Hair Salon http://flipsaloninc.com/ "I should have been A Stylist" these paintings captured a wonderful mix of ideas in a distinctly humorous manner.

From a Style perspective I could not help but wonder about our common grooming experience. Who amongst us can ignore the needs and condition of our hair? Our Hair Stylist and Colorist are entrusted with it's health and beauty. We choose wisely and pay dearly don't we. It's worth it to have this help and expertise. It's relaxing and renewing to visit a salon and be groomed. Isn't that what our pets do every season? Some more than others of course. I'm told by conscientious dog owners that when they brush them out, it helps the natural shedding process and seems to be a form of message therapy.

Biologically we are told our cells reproduce and replace themselves everyday...so we understand CHANGE is in our DNA, even if only on a subconscious level. Perhaps our need for Novelty in fashion and style is a different form of natural transition, an outgrowth of our inner genetic evolution...it's one way to understand the drive.

Now that I think about it some owners and their dogs have an uncanny similarity in appearance. What is that?

Looking at these paintings transported me to an alternate fashion universe where I began to connect some obscure and wonderful dots. It certainly shed new light on the phrase "Animal Attraction" in a fun Beverly Hills Chihuahua kind of way.

Cultural Norms and those who make the Law

"Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" is the best known phrase of the Star Spangled Banner. In America, it all depends as it turns out, on who has the Power in the land and how Brave you're feeling about your fashion choices.

Why you might ask? Well according to my Sociology text book, 'Deviance" varies according to Cultural Norms. Let's face it, when it comes to fashion who is Normal? The Quakers? How about the Native American Indians? What about our Dear Lady Gaga? It seems silly I know, but if you study clothing and fashion as I do you know the wheel of history keeps turning and that means our knowledge of the world of clothing grows and changes with it. Alexander McQueen was an Alien in the fashion world light years ahead of the best and he was labeled a "Deviant" personality. Good thing for us his work was never out-lawed!

Back to my Textbook...Cultural Norms and the way people define "rule breaking" involves Social Power. The Law, claimed Karl Marx, is the means by which powerful people protect their interest." His thoughts are the perfect segue into the obscure and curious fashion related laws we have here in America. "Mobile Alabama for instance has outlawed the wearing of "Stiletto heeled shoes." I'm sure you have noticed the Art Shoe above and wondered Is this A deadly Weapon? Who knows...I'm sure there's a story, a rational philosophy behind this fashion enemy. We can only imagine the fetish witnesses and dancing that finally brought it to justice! How about "South Padre Island, Texas and their legal banishment of neckties?" Sure it can be used to strangle someone, but do we really need to add disclaimer language to this timeless fashion staple?

How about live and let live? I say we allow people to make fashion fools or stars of themselves in every state in America without concern for these strange unenforceable laws. Last time I checked freedom of Speech was still protected under the First Amendment to the Constitution. Sure the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, such as on "hate speech". Who is "Hating" who here?

Besides when it comes to Social labeling in Fashion, Prada and Burberry enforce Style by the power of their Beauty. Beauty is timeless, it's egalitarian and it's very American!

Camille LaMontagne: Changing the Face of Art and Identity

When we think of Fashion it's easy to overlook the work of A Make-Up Artist. In some cases that is precisely the point. The Clothes are the focus, unless you are watching a John Galliano production that is. His work is pure theater, high Art Fashion at it's best. Camille LaMontagne is a fan of Galliano's work and has plans to make her own mark on Fashion runways around the world.

As you can see she explores "Identity" through Illustration, Make-Up, Sculpture and Modeling. Camille is also an accomplished Portrait Artist working in Oil and has won numerous competitions for her work over the years.

She admires the Art work of Nathan Deyoung, Levi Van Veluw, Cindy Sherman and her Father, Paul LaMontagne who is a retired Commercial Artist.

When Camille talks about her work as a Make-Up Artist, her face lights up like a Solar Panel. Her Vision and energy is refreshing and so is her work. The black and white photograph of two Women in knitted headscarves speaks to her complex creative abilities. It stopped me in my tracks when I spotted it on display at 515 in Royal Oak. I will be adding a copy of this photograph to my collection in the near future. It has the quiet impact of a hundred secrets waiting to be told.

The face sculpture made of tissue paper required creative engineering and a lot of patience to produce. It's clever and intriguing. The same is true of the dotted self-portrait project. Her black and white illustration book is a study in transition. Camille modeled for the full body black and white shot and altered the image to create an eclectic visual story.

Author Leonard Koren, wrote "Beauty is an altered state of consciousness, an extraordinary moment of poetry and grace." Camille works in this realm fluidly and with boundless passion.

Keep an eye out for her work in galleries, runways and in print as she further explores the Art of Identity, Make-Up and Fashion Illustration.

Light, Line and the Power of Discovery...

Artist: Jon Pickell

Jon Pickell is one of those people who works deliberately with "Organic Energy". He's an Artist with many passions. These include photography, print making, fiber print work and Reiki energy balancing.
He admires the work of Fashion Photography Artist: Deborah Turbeville, Lucas Samaras and Helmet Newton. His work however includes a distinct and careful balance of light, line and energy. "Creating ambiguous spaces for his figures to occupy is part of his skill. Many of his portraits imply a situation or activity beyond the viewer's knowledge." Jon has no desire to tell you what to think. He respects what you bring to his Artwork. Viewing his work is a fluid process between Artist and audience. Fashion is an integral element of the above selected photos, but it is by no means the whole story. There is so much more to wonder about in these pieces. I love that about Jon's Artistry, it's a process of discovery.

"Discovery is a sociological cause of change. It involves recognizing and understanding more fully something already in existence. The first image is the result of my Internet research on the characteristics of Radium. "In 1898 Marie Claire unintentionally left a rock on a piece of photographic paper, noticed the emissions from the rock had exposed the paper, and thus discovered radium (Ra 88)." I was struck by the organic line work of the Radium salt alpha particles. Notice the line work in Jon's photographs.

"Pure radium metal is brilliant white (I'm thinking about the flash of a camera bulb), but blackens when exposed to air. Radium is luminescent (giving a faint blue color)." Notice the similar luminescent faint blue color in several of Jon's hand painted photographs.

Discovery....Serendipty.....Coincidence? I'd like to think it is all of these things. It's difficult to fathom how this happens. But it is delightful to wonder about how it might all work together. The Art of the universe is a mysterious and creative energy source. How perfect it is that Jon included Superman in one of his photo stories. To Bid or Not to Bid...This is the Question

Hudson's Mink Stole: DuMouchelles On-line Catalogue

Auction houses have a historic and distinguished presence in the market place. Sotheby's and Christies are known world wide, but here in Detroit, we have DouMouchelles, Fine Art Auctioneers and Appraisers, in operation since 1927.

Earlier this year I searched their on-line catalogue http://www.dumouchelle.com/ to get a feel for the type of clothing items to be found. I was happy to spot this Hudson's Vintage Mink Stole in the lot. The bid price range for the piece was reasonable to my thinking so I made a special trip to 409 East Jefferson in Detroit.

There it was in the gallery hanging on a mannequin ready for me to inspect. I studied the lining, seaming and condition of the fur. It was well cared for over the years. I tried it on for fit, and quickly began to dream of owning a piece of retail history. Hudson's was a retail gem back in the day and has a special place in the memories of many native Detroit families.

I could not be available to attend the actual auction so I decided on a "Telephone Bid" process, and filled out the necessary paperwork to participate. I found the staff to be genuinely helpful and attentive. This made my first splash into the world of auction bidding easy and enjoyable.

Long story short, I lost the piece to another bidder with deeper pockets. I had a definite price limitation going into it and quickly lost my dream in three bids.

I was told by a staff member at DuMouchelles that they don't normally get large amounts of clothing or collections come to auction. I hope this will change soon. I just know there are so many collectors of Important Fashion in the Detroit Metro Area. Those who collect, take care of the investment and understand the value of buying and selling it. Those of us who hunt for fine Vintage Clothing are links in the recycling chain of history and Style. Clothing is a Cultural element of history and DuMochelles has a special place in both the past and future of Detroit's fashion runway. Happy Bidding!

The Painter's Apprentice: Emilio Rojas

While traveling through life, Little Friend came to know a wanderer called the Painter's Apprentice. This man was always surrounded by people asking him about paintings he had yet to paint.

The paintings he described were so ethereal that they resembled music forming in air. The Painter's Apprentice said that the timeless and the eternal could be captured through feeling and sensitivity, releasing the soul toward the spirit's essence. He described a painting of dancing in which the body was a connection between the earth and the soul.

Then he envisioned a painting made of embossed letters - each one a word, a sentence, a prayer, a book wherein the author had woven tales out of history, imagination and dreams. He wanted to create a painting in which the brush strokes and colors were the essence of all that could be ordered and balanced. He also described a painting in which the motifs were feelings formed from the tiniest elements of life in the depths of the interior world.

Then the Painter's Apprentice said that his true aspiration was to paint people. Not those who claimed greatness and then sank into the mud of oblivion. Not those who spoke hurtful words or performed acts of hypocrisy. Not those who used others to climb to the top or exchanged Love's treasures for trinkets, popularity or material wealth. The people he wish to paint were simple folk without disguise, those who were at once ethereal and steadfast. They were the ones whose wings could carry them to the horizon.

Such people teach us how to walk through the valleys of each day. They draw a smile from our hearts and say to us: "To Live is to learn what we were, what we are and what, with the setting of the sun, we shall be. To live is also to understand the human being and the universe, and thus to become a maker of stars. To live is to look at our outstretched hands, one of which contains nothing, the other, everything. To live is to be the immortal energy and light that flow from the Rose of the Heart."

This is how the Painter's Apprentice talked about the pictures he was going to paint. But he never made a single sketch. Curious to see what these paintings would look like, Little Friend followed the Painter's Apprentice for a long time. Finally, when the Painter's Apprentice produced nothing, Little Friend, disappointed, left him. After some time had passed, Little Friend realized that the word was the brush of the Painter's Apprentice and each person part of his canvas.

Eco Style Artist: A Man and His Mannequin on A Mission!

Matthew Richmond is A Self-Made Artist in every sense of the phrase. You can't learn what he knows instinctively, and the path he treads has not been entirely paved before. This is in part due to the fact that his talent includes a unique blend of 'Green Design" in a material sense, Anthropometric Construction, and Couture Fashion all rolled into one. Inspired by 60s Fashion Star Bob Mackey, Matt's personal Style is a mix of vintage menswear and "Tuxedo Shirts" which he collects. He also admires the "Artful Hybrid Style" of Lady GaGa.

The collage of photos I included in this blog speak for themselves. They are each inspired and carefully crafted from unorthodox materials. I'm especially enchanted with the Floral Dress as well as the Grocery Bag gown. I'd even seriously consider wearing the latter to the next DIA Fashion Gala if I were sure it would stay put.

Matt is employed with Douglas J. Aveda in Royal Oak, MI. You can find him in Guest Services, however he is also their unofficial "Visual Merchandise Guru." Many of his one of a kind creations are often on display there, though he is also hired to do the same for other venues. No one can accuse Matt of having small goals with a Fan Page name like that. It's clear he has a long view approach to his work. Next time you see a good looking Man lugging his Mannequin around town, it just might be Matt on his next "Mission", after all "FreeStyle" is the way he rolls!

Fashion Artist, Life and Death Concept Dress

Janna Coumoundouros Bissett explores her appreciation for Fashion in many forms. Photography, Jewelry, Clothing design, Illustration, Mixed Media Art and Personal Style, are all pieces of her creative vision.

The "Maternity Egg dress" is a full scale mixed media piece she completed in college. "It's about life and death and a visual mix of those ideas".

The original material used to develop the dress idea was tissue paper and an empty egg shell. Janna carefully hand stitched panels "quilt style" of a fried egg image to the dress backing material. "I have sewn you together In your Mothers Womb" is a Biblical quote that describes the conceptual and literal process of this Dress project beautifully. A determined, difficult and delicate process.

The Dress was then worn by a pregnant model who was photographed. At the gallery showing those photos were framed in an old Architectural Window and the Dress hung next to the window (as shown in the photo). The Death aspect of the project included a subtle historic "Symbol" of Abortion: "The Hanger" the dress clung to.

In the end the Dress "passed away" due to it's fine construction and the adversities of time. As for the Abortion controversy I can't help but think about ALL the Creative Projects and dreams that never come to pass in our lives....Aborted by Apathy, Circumstance and the Limits of Time.

City Map Dress: Carolina Herrera, Spring Colleciton 2010

I have received many greeting cards over the years from friends who love fashion and one of them inspired this post.

Every day we rise and shine determined to take on the day. Before we set out on our way...important choices need to be made about 'What to Wear".

There you are standing in front of your closet, dresser, or pile of possiblities. What will it be? What kind of day does your intuitive compass say it will be? Will you allow circumstances alone to determine your Costume? What about Vision...how fabulous do you want this day to be? Set your stage, dress yourself in that role, go out there and make this world more beautiful because you showed up!

Photography....Artist Archive of Family Style

"I guess you are kind of curious as to who I am, but I am one of those who do not have a regular name. My name depends on you. Just call me whatever is in your mind." This quote is from the book "Watermelon Sugar". It occurred to me when reading it...that the majority of people we see in our daily lives fit into this category. It's inevitable...our paths cross so many anonymous people...in the parking lot...at the mall...the library. It may also apply to me...many of you don't know me yet.

In this case...I know something about the Stylish Women and girl in these photos. They belong to native Detroit Artist Toni Nunn's personal archive of family photographs. The black and white shot is circa 1955, the occasion was Toni's homecoming. Mrs. Lizzie Lee Jackson (The happy Mother) wears a lovely printed day dress for the occasion. Her look is simple and elegant, it speaks of her refined taste and youthful beauty. The colorized photo was taken in 1962 the day of the Artist Holy Communion. Toni is dressed in a traditional religious outfit and her Mother is wearing a classic pencil dress with Mink Stole.

You may have family photos that capture the Style of a special occasion in your own colleciton. Or perhaps you collect old photos or work with them in your art. If so take another look at them and try to appreciate the care that went into selecting the clothes that help to tell the story of the day. As you call them whatever is in your mind....look for the Style Story.

You got it...Detroit is my earth seat. It's my adopted home and believe it or not it's a fascinating place to be. Oh sure it's 'Ground Zero" when it comes to big cities in the United States...but hey it's a distinction with limitless creative possibility as well. We have a chance to reinvent ourselves! Isn't that what visionaries do? Look at Cher, Madonna, Lady Gaga...their Style changes and works for them...not the other way around.

The photo is one I took at the Detroit Institute of Art (grand opening night, 2007). The DIA underwent a spectacular renovation that included additions and important changes. It was always an important cultural gem in Detroit and now it Sparkles even brighter. I call this photo my DIA Bling shot!

Freestyle......what does it mean to you? Perhaps it has a musical reference as in Hip Hop or Rap as it did for my eldest Son Nick. When I asked him what that word/phrase meant to him he said it conjured up images of a rapper at a microphone serving up verbal poetry to the crowd. That made me smile.....I checked Wikipedia and found a sensible list of references: sport activities of all sorts, sledding, wrestling, I didn't quite make it to the pole dancing Freestyle page but I bet it's out there. Yikes!

My Webster's Dictionary says Freestyle is a noun...."A competitive event, as swimming, in which the contestant chooses his or her own style."

Personal style and our dance with clothing is a basic evolutionary experience.....a hodgepodge of disasters and winners. As we move through life our collections/closets reflect those changes. We learn as we go --->>>

The photo is an esoteric vignette....Birds in all their natural glory are so divinely dressed. Their feathers have adorned wearable creations for centuries. One of my favorite places to visit in Chicago is the Bird House at Lincoln Park Zoo. The color, texture, and variety of delicate splendor is amazing. The freedom and style those Birds represent is a great visual for launching this blog....FreeStyle In Detroit!

Life Style...Style...Fashion. Empires have been built and created around the pursuit of Beauty and the Transforming Power of Style. But who defines it? Those who Spin it's mesmerizing web....why do they do it (besides the obvious)? Is there something more captivating and elusive about style that we chase....that we long for?
